Excitement builds as Women’s EURO 2022 countdown begins

The UEFA Women’s European Championship 2022 comes to England next month, and excitement surrounding the tournament is reaching new heights as fans and local members of the nine host cities look forward to seeing the action unfold.

In exactly a months time, the tournament will kick off at Old Trafford, and move down south on 11th July to Brighton and Hove which will see the Amex stadium host the first of its three games in which England’s Lionesses will face Norway. Brighton & Hove was selected as one of the nine host cities of the tournament following a combined bid by Brighton & Hove City Council, Brighton & Hove Albion FC and the Sussex Country Football Assoication. The bid also included plans for a legacy programme in which will all nine host cities working to provide 500,000 new opportunities to encourage women and girls across all ages and abilities to participate and become more active in grassroots football.

The total attendance of this summer’s Women’s Euro is expected to comfortably exceed previous levels of the 2017 Euro’s which was held in the Netherlands. As a result of the rapid growth and interest in women’s football, a record breaking amount of tickets were purchased in the first release period of tickets earlier this year, with numerous games selling out across the country to due popular demand.

A report completed by Ernst & Young predicts that around 435,000 and 525,000 tickets will be sold for the tournament, with England on good form to reach that predication with all three Women’s Euro group matches and the final at Wembley already selling out.

Similarly to last year’s Euros 2020 tournament, the Women’s Euros will also take place a year later after it was organically anticipated for due to the coronavirus pandemic. The highly anticipated tournament will see global football stars such as Vivianne Miedema, Lucy Bronze and Pernille Harder battle it out to take home the Women’s European Championship trophy which is currently held by previous host nation the Netherlands who won the previous tournament.
